Anxiety Wants Certainty, Not Solutions

Anxiety isn’t asking “how do I fix this?” — it’s asking “can I know for certain?”

That’s why reassurance fails. Any certainty expires in minutes.

When you Google symptoms at 2am or ask your partner “but are you sure you’re not angry?” — you’re not seeking information. You’re seeking certainty. And certainty is the one thing anxiety will never accept.

The compulsion feeds itself: checking provides momentary relief, then the doubt returns. The question wasn’t answered — because anxiety doesn’t ask answerable questions.

Once you see it: refreshing your inbox doesn’t reduce email anxiety. Checking your bank balance four times doesn’t make you more financially secure. The behaviour feels productive. It’s maintenance work — keeping uncertainty at bay until the next check.

What breaks the cycle isn’t finding certainty. It’s catching yourself asking “but are you sure?” for the third time and realising: I’m not seeking an answer. I’m performing a ritual that will never be enough.
