The Lock That Picks Itself
The most efficient form of domination is the kind the dominated enforce for free.
Marx noticed something about power that brute force couldn’t explain. Serfdom needed lords. Slavery needed overseers. But capitalism seemed to run on the willing participation of the people it exploited. Workers didn’t just tolerate the system — they defended it.
He never used the phrase “false consciousness.” That was Engels, in an 1893 letter to Franz Mehring, describing how the “real motive forces remain unknown” to the thinker. But the idea was Marx’s: that the ruling class doesn’t just control resources — it controls the frame through which everyone interprets reality. Their interests become “common sense.” Their arrangements become “natural.”
The sharpest illustration is W.E.B. Du Bois‘s concept of the ”psychological wage.” In the antebellum South, non-slaveholding whites — roughly 75% of the white population — fought and died for a slave economy that actively depressed their own wages. They gained almost nothing materially. But racial hierarchy gave them status, and that status was enough to keep them pulling the trigger in the wrong direction.
System justification theory, developed by psychologists John Jost and Mahzarin Banaji in 1994, found something uncomfortable: low-status groups consistently rate the existing social order as more fair and legitimate than high-status groups do. The people with the most reason to object are the least likely to.
That’s the lock picking itself — not stupidity, not ignorance, but a system that recruits its own enforcers. In 2020, gig companies spent $200 million on California’s Proposition 22 to keep drivers classified as independent contractors. No minimum wage, no overtime, no benefits. The drivers campaigned for it. “Flexibility.” “Be your own boss.” The material loss was measurable. But the language of independence was enough. Du Bois called it a psychological wage. The currency changes. The transaction doesn’t.
